Caring for Freshwater Pearls Freshwater pearls are delicate and possess a soft surface which can easily be scratched or damaged. It’s imperative to keep pearls separate from other jewelry and handle with care. Ideally, store pearls inside a pouch rather than loose in a jewelry box to prevent nicks. The acidity of a woman’s skin may gradually seep into pearls, affecting luster and shape. To reduce this problem, always polish your pearls with a soft, non-abrasive cloth after taking them off. Extreme weather conditions can sometimes damage pearl jewelry. Wearing them in particularly hot, humid or dry conditions can change the color of your pearls or worse, cause cracks to appear on the surface. Be careful about exposing pearl jewelry to chemicals. Spraying perfume while you’re wearing your pearl necklace can cause considerable damage over time. Also, avoid exposing pearls to liquids, particularly strong ones such as vinegar, lemon, ammonia and alcohol. Use only jewelry cleaners specifically intended for pearl cleaning. Pearls should not be steam cleaned. To preserve the luster of your pearls, occasionally polish with a few drops of olive oil on a soft, non-abrasive cloth. |
